COVID-19 Information

Ultrasounds

Ultrasound technology is a noninvasive test for imaging internal organs and glands. Ultrasound does not use radiation to produce images. Providers use ultrasound exams with pregnancy, but there are situations where it is used to look inside your body for guidance on procedures.

Ultrasounds typically take an average of 30 minutes

Preparing for an ultrasound

Preparations will depend on the type of ultrasound you are having, and your health care provider will give you the necessary instructions.

  • If you are having an abdomen ultrasound, you may not be able to eat or drink (except water) for six to eight hours prior to the exam.
  • Some MRIs may require an injection of dye into a vein to give the radiologist more information about vascular structures in the body. If an IV dye is necessary for your exam, drink extra fluids for 48 hours following your exam to help flush the dye out of your body.
  • If you are having an obstetric or pelvic ultrasound, drink 32 oz. of water one hour prior to the exam and do not urinate before the test.
