A Good Night’s Sleep is Your Best Medicine
Not sleeping well can have a significant impact on your daily life and can potentially cause serious consequences to your health. At Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, our Sleep and Breathing Lab can provide an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment of sleep disorders, so you can be rested and healthy.
Sleep disorders affect as many as 70 million Americans, but only about 5 percent seek treatment. The sleep disorder team at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital can connect you with the care you need. Our Sleep and Breathing Lab evaluates and treats a range of sleep-related breathing disorders such as such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.
To diagnose sleep disorders, a specialized team will conduct a sleep study, a test that will record your body's activity while you’re asleep. Sleep studies for narcolepsy are also offered.
Many symptoms of sleep disorders are often overlooked. These include:
- Excessive fatigue or drowsiness
- Loud snoring or nighttime gasping
- Waking with headache, leg cramps, dry mouth or congestion
- High blood pressure
- Reduced memory or concentration
- Depression
- Atrial fibrillation
- Weight gain
- Reduced circulation to arms and legs
- Decreased libido or erectile dysfunction
If you believe you might have a sleep disorder, contact your physician, who can refer you to our lab for testing to be conducted. You must have a doctor's order for an evaluation.
