Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital is a recipient of HealthGrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award, making the Hospital among the nation's top 10 percent in patient satisfaction. The designation is based on patient survey data collected as part of the federal government's Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). The Hospital is one of only two in the St. Louis area and one of nine in all of Missouri to receive this prestigious national award.

The federal HCAHPS initiative gathers patient responses to 27 survey questions related to:

  • Physician and nurse communication
  • Speed of responsiveness
  • Hospital cleanliness and noise levels
  • Medication information
  • Post-discharge care instructions

John Antes, president of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, knows patients have a choice in where they receive their health care. "Patients enter a hospital and expect to receive excellent clinical care, delivered by trained staff and modern technology -- that's a given," he says. "Patients should also expect that their care is delivered by compassionate and caring staff. The patient experience goes well beyond healing their illness."

"We feel honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious national award. Knowing that our patients rated their experience so high is very satisfying," adds Antes. "We have great employees and physicians. This award is for them."

To determine the recipients of the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award, HealthGrades analyzed HCAHPS survey results for 2,592 hospitals nationwide. Hospitals needed to meet bed size, survey size and clinical-quality thresholds to be considered for the award. The award is the first HealthGrades distinction based on patients' perspectives of hospital care.

"HealthGrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award reflects Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital's strong commitment to providing its patients with a superior level of service, something the entire organization can take pride in," says HealthGrades Executive Vice President Sarah Loughran.
