Free Wireless Internet Access

Patients and visitors can stay connected to the Web, check e-mail or surf the Internet on their laptops or PDAs for free when visiting Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital. When first connected, users are presented with BJC's Guidelines for Network Use and Internet Access and Use Agreement. When the user accepts them, the Internet becomes available. Users need not worry about the wireless connection affecting Hospital equipment, because the low power emissions have been proven to not interfere with sensitive medical equipment.

WI-FI FAQs
Are costs involved?
No, this is a free service. Costs are not passed to you or your insurance company. You must, however, provide your own wireless device and wireless connectivity.

What is a wireless network?
A wireless network works much the same way as other computer networks, except there are no cables or wires involved; instead, a device with built-in wireless capability or a special wireless network card is required. When properly configured, your computer will communicate with a dedicated network, providing access to the Internet that's similar to your home or work access.

What equipment do I need?

  • Wireless Device: You must provide your own laptop computer or PDA. Most PCs, Pocket PCs and Macintosh computers should work, if they are properly configured and have an appropriate wireless network card
  • Wireless Card: You must provide your own wireless network card. Some new devices have the wireless card built in -- otherwise, it will probably be inserted into a slot on the side of the laptop or the top of the PDA
  • Supported wireless formats: Your network card must support either 802.11b or 802.11g frequencies. The Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital wireless network does not support other industry standards
  • Browser: Your hardware must use a standard Internet browser such as Internet Explorer, America Online or Netscape
    But I don't have a wireless card.
  • Most wireless cards are standardized and can be purchased online or from a retail electronics store. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital cannot install the wireless card.

How secure is my Internet session?
Wireless networks are shared among all users and are public. All public networks lack the high level of security you might be accustomed to at work and home. We encourage you to be careful when sending personally identifiable or sensitive information. If the web sites you visit support the industry standard SSL encryption, our network connection to that site is as secure as if you were on a standard wired network.

It doesn't work. Who can I call for help?
Privacy and liability issues prevent us from working on your computer. We recommend contacting your appropriate support area or help desk of the computer/card manufacturer for assistance.

I'd like to print an e-mail or article.
It is not possible to print from our public wireless network. Please e-mail the page's URL address to your home computer and print it when you return home.

Chapel
ChapelThe chapel is located in the main entrance hallway. It offers a place of quiet serenity for those who seek comfort in time of need. Its mosaic waterfall and beautiful surroundings were made possible by the generous contribution of the Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital Auxiliary. Grace Chapel is named after Grace Selinger, a long-time auxilian and volunteer.

The chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You are invited to write daily prayer requests in a book located in the chapel. Spiritual support booklets also are available.
