Our goal at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital is to provide outstanding care to you -- before, during and after your surgery. The greatest comfort that can be provided for you and your family members is important to us.
If you have specific questions about your procedure
or if you develop a cold, fever or flu-like symptoms in the 24 hours before your surgery
please call your doctor.
or if you develop a cold, fever or flu-like symptoms in the 24 hours before your surgery
please call your doctor.
Before Your Surgery
A nurse from the Surgery Department will call you the day before your surgery to get information about your medical history and any medications you currently are taking. Please be prepared for this brief interview.
If you prefer to contact us, call 636.916.9184 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for your individual instructions.
On the Day of Your Surgery
Arrive 1-1/2 hours before your scheduled surgery time to allow adequate time for your surgery preparation. In addition, you should be prepared for any schedule changes, including the possibility of either delays or advances to your scheduled surgery time.
If you are having outpatient surgery, you will check in at our convenient Outpatient Surgery Center at 100 Entrance Way on the Hospital campus.
If you have having inpatient surgery, you will check in at the reception area of the Hospital's main lobby.
Wherever you check in, you will have a brief registration process. Then the registrar will escort you to the pre-operative holding area.
Your surgery preparation may require additional lab testing, and:
- Your medical history will be taken by a nurse and an anesthesiologist
- If you are scheduled to receive anesthesia, someone from the Anesthesiology Department will talk with you about the type of anesthesia you will get and answer your questions
- You will change into a hospital gown
- Your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure and pulse) will be taken
- Other procedures may be performed to ready you for your surgery
Your family and friends can wait in the surgery waiting area, where magazines and a television are available. They may join you in the pre-operative holding area once preparations for your procedure are completed. Because of space limitations and out of respect for other families, please limit the number of people who accompany you.
Food and Drink Restrictions
For your safety and to ensure your surgery can be performed, do not eat anything (including gum, mints and candy) or drink anything (including water) after midnight the day before your surgery, unless you are otherwise directed.
Valuables
Leave money, jewelry and other valuables at home.
Personal
Do not wear eye makeup or clothing that must be pulled over your head. In general, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. If you wear glasses, you will need them to read and sign consent forms. You may be asked to remove contact lenses and dentures.
After Your Surgery
Family members or friends who have accompanied you will be notified when your surgery is completed. Instructions from your doctor will be reviewed with you and your family prior to your discharge.
If You Are an Outpatient
- You will be reunited with your family in Phase II recovery
- You may be discharged as soon as 30 minutes after your surgery, so have someone with you to take you home
- We cannot release you to drive yourself home or to take public transportation alone
- We recommend that you have a responsible adult with you for the first 24 hours after your surgery
If your doctor requires that you stay overnight with us, pack necessary toiletries, pajamas, a robe and slippers. Again, leave valuables at home. Most people find it more convenient to leave their bag in the car until they have been admitted into the Hospital. Then, a family member or friend can deliver your bag directly to your room.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you.
Thank you for choosing Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital.
